course-roughThe rough water sea kayaking course is a full day course designed for paddlers who intend to try their hand at open coast paddling or intend to play in the surf. The course will also increase your time at sea, your exposure to wind and waves, your skill level during rescues and if weather allows, your confidence in moderately challenging sea conditions. Ideally you will have completed the level 2 Irish Canoe Union course or can demonstrate intermediate kayak paddling skills and experience. The course will be run in sea conditions of force 3 – 4 which makes it a fun and exhilarating.

Paddlers will learn to learn to brace and turn a kayak quickly in windy conditions and be introduced to the practical aspects of the effects of weather on the open sea.

You will also be introduced to the art of riding waves. This is an essential element of open sea paddling and you will gain essential experience in handling waves and judging how to best negotiate or avoid surf landings. The day will conclude with a deep water rescue practice session.

Note: Weather and water conditions are a major influence on sea paddling and we reserve the right to alter the schedule as needed. All kayaking gear is included in the cost.
